If you are a pet owner, you know that administering pills can be difficult. Cats tend to be more stubborn than dogs and will make things more difficult by either spitting out the pill or hiding from you. Not only is this frustrating, but it can also be dangerous for your pet. Every day, cats take oral medication to keep them healthy and happy.
A new product on the market is a pill shooter for cats. Most owners know that a cat can be very hard to give a pill, but with these nifty little cat pill shooters you can avoid all of this.
Administering pills to my Maine Coon, who has a heart defect, four times a day has become a breeze since I started using a pill popper. I highly recommend purchasing empty gel capsules to encapsulate medications, particularly for bitter-tasting ones like clopidogrel, which can cause your cat to foam at the mouth. Opt for size 4 capsules for convenience. Additionally, I suggest keeping a syringe with a small amount of water on hand to help the tablets go down smoothly.
This article will teach you how to give your cat medicine in the easiest way possible with a pill shooter for cats, no matter his or her size or personality!
What is a Pill Shooter?
Pill Shooters, also known as Pill Poppers, are a long, fat syringe that lets you place a small pill inside of it and then use it to give your cat medicine. If you’re scared of getting bitten or sticking your fingers in there, this is the perfect tool for you!
How do you use a Pill Shooter?
To use the pill popper, firstly you need to get prepared by placing the pill or capsule into the shooter. You then need to restrain your cat by placing your hand on top of their head with your thumb and point finger behind their eyes and cheekbones at the temples and then tilt the cat’s head upwards. You may wish to wrap your cat in a towel leaving only the head exposed as this will help prevent it from scratching you.
Once you’ve gained control of your cat’s head, you can use your dominant hand to open the cat’s mouth by placing the pill gun in the side of the mouth. Next, quickly but gently push the pill popper to the back of your cat’s mouth and push the pill in. I find it helpful to chase the pill down with a little bit of water in a syringe. Always check your cat’s mouth after giving him a pill to make sure it has been swallowed.
Handy Tips for Giving Your Cat a Pill
- It may need two people to restrain your cat. It is best that the second person holds the cat from its rear, holding the two front feet and their arms against the cat’s body.
- If you fear your cat scratching, trim their nails before you attempt to give them a pill.
- Be quick! The quicker you are in administering the pill the less your cat will fight you.
- Syringe some liquid such as water, tuna juice or chicken broth directly after administering the pill to assist your cat in swallowing the pill.
