How to find a reputable Ragdoll Cat Breeder

Ragdoll cats are beautiful cats that are large, long-haired, and known for their calm temperament. They are noted for their gorgeous blue eyes and the colorpoint pattern in their fur.

When purchasing your Ragdoll kitten, it is essential to look for a reputable cat breeder. A reputable Ragdoll Cat Breeder will be registered with a recognised Cat Breed Association in the country or area that you reside in such as The International Cat Association (TICA), the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA), The British Ragdoll Association (TBRCC) or the Australian Cat Federation (ACF).

A breeder registered with a cat association guarantees that when you purchase a Ragdoll kitten from them, they are purebred, traditional ragdoll kittens. They should make sure their breeding stock has been subjected to genetic testing to make sure they are free from inherited diseases and defects such as Feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

If you find Ragdoll kittens for sale in a pet store or online advert, you cannot be sure whether they are purebred, are ethically reared and are in good health. Many breeders have long waiting lists for their available ragdoll kittens.

A registered Ragdoll breeder will have their registration number and the cat association’s name they are registered with listed on their website and/or Facebook page. If you have any doubts about a breeder’s credentials, you should always make checks with the listed cat association by contacting them.

If you want to find reputable breeders in your area, look for cat shows. These shows will take place all year round and you can chat with the breeders and view the breeding cats on show. Many of these cats will be from champion bloodlines. Most breeders will not let you visit their kittens in their cattery/home until they have had their first vaccination.

You may also want to consider a Ragdoll Rescue Cat. There are always Ragdoll cats that need to be rehomed due to various individual circumstances.

What is the difference between pet, show and breeder quality kittens?

  • Pet Quality – sold without breeding rights and generally not as perfectly marked as to show quality kittens.
  • Show Quality – sold without breeding rights and are breed standard, perfectly marked and has features that make them more likely to perform well in the show ring.
  • Show/Breeder Quality – sold with breeding rights and have all the qualities of a show kitten.

Visit our Ragdoll Cat price page for more information on average kitten prices in your country. You may find that some Ragdoll Breeders will charge more for bicolor, lilac, chocolate or mink kittens. You should also expect to pay more if your kitten is the offspring of an awarded grand champion.

What is included as part of the purchase price of a kitten?

Ragdoll kittens are usually available at the age of 12-16 weeks and breeders will generally stipulate they are sold as an indoor cat only. A reputable cat breeder will guarantee before you take ownership of your Ragdoll kitten that they are:

  • Registered with their chosen cat breed association
  • Are in good health and free of genetic defects such as PKD(Kidney) and HCM(Heart) genetic diseases and are FeLV and FIV Negative
  • Microchipped (depending on the country)
  • Have all their vaccinations
  • Have been wormed regularly
  • Flea treated
  • Vet checked
  • Litter box trained

In some countries, such as Australia, it is also a requirement that kittens are desexed before leaving the breeder. When you pick up your kitten you should receive a Registered Pedigree Certificate, Immunisation Passport and Microchip Certificate (if microchipped).
