Ragdoll cats are known to be one of the best pets for seniors. These felines are known to be gentle and affectionate, so they make ideal companions for those who prefer to live in a calm environment. However, these sweet creatures also come with some challenges that you need to consider before deciding to adopt one as your pet. Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages of adopting ragdoll cats as pets for seniors.

Why get a cat in your senior years?

People have been searching for a way to live longer for thousands of years and many believe that there is a ‘breakthrough’ out there that can make us look younger and feel better. The health food and vitamin industry has grown exponentially in recent years as people search for ways to improve their health.

But is this really the answer? NO! Studies continually show that owning a pet can extend a person’s life and make them happier. This is especially true for older persons who need it the most.

The Pros of Owning a Ragdoll Cat

While pets are good for any age, the aging population is particularly affected by pet ownership. When social networks begin to slow down, having a cat jump on your lap and ask for attention causes the owner to feel needed. The responsibility of caring for a pet also provides purpose. Once children have grown and moved away, it can keep the onset of depression at bay.

Owning a cat is good for your health. In spite of the annoyances that come along with pet ownership – the scratching of the furniture, the weekly litter box cleaning, and accidents you may have to clean up – studies have consistently shown lowered blood pressure and cholesterol. This is truer for cat owners than dog owners, although no explanation can be found. Pet owners are also more active since they have to keep up with their animal’s needs. This provides a less sedentary lifestyle, leading to better health through physical activity.

There are many benefits to adopting or getting a ragdoll cat as a pet for seniors. Ragdolls are loving and affectionate pets who enjoy cuddling and being around people. They make good companion animals because they are patient and gentle with children, other pets, and elderly members of the family.  Ragdolls are indoor cats and don’t require a lot of space, meaning they are suitable for apartment living or small homes. They are also low maintenance cats, requiring little to no care other than feeding and providing them with plenty of love and attention.  Their fur is non-mating requiring very little grooming, which can be a relief for elderly cat owners who may have other priorities.

The Cons of Owning a Ragdoll Cat

There are some things that might detract from a happy experience if not taken into account. For instance, pets require special care such as flea and tick medication. Money is one of the biggest causes of stress in a person’s life. So be sure the individual can properly care for their pet and not become stressed out over occasional costs. Food, litter, toys and proper enclosures can quickly pile up. If such matters can be accommodated then the benefits of pet ownership are well worth the investment.

If you plan to travel considerably in your senior years, you might think twice before adding a pet to your life. After all, it would not be fair to obtain a pet and then not have time to give it the care and time they need.  However, if you’re looking for a travel companion and are seeking a cat that is comfortable traveling and loves being around people, the Ragdoll might be the perfect breed for you. Ragdoll cats are an expensive breed of cat and your budget on a pension may not be able to stretch that far. Many breeders retire their breeding queens from time to time and are looking for new homes for them at a fraction of the cost of buying a Ragdoll kitten. You may be able to retire together as two retirees living your twilight years together. You can also check out your local shelter for Ragdoll cats needing a loving home.

Sometimes it’s not always the facts that make someone want a pet. Once your heart is ready to let an animal in, you will be able to experience the joy that comes from knowing you are loved. Adopting a ragdoll cat is a great way for seniors to enjoy the company of a furry friend and stay young!
